History of Saint Paul Cathedral
Saint Paul’s Cathedral is the main Church of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Tirana-Durrës. It is the seat of the Archbishop and the center of his pastoral ministry, as well as the unifying point for all the faithful of the diocese. The temple was built between 1998 and 2002, after the first stone had been laid and blessed by Pope Saint John Paul II during his apostolic visit to Albania in April 1993. Saint Mother Teresa often prayed on the site destined for the cathedral, placing medals with the image of Our Lady along the perimeter. Saint Paul’s Cathedral fulfilled a long-standing effort to provide the capital with a cathedral church. Already in 1939, Blessed Fr. Shtjefën Kurti, parish priest of the Catholics in Tirana and chaplain to the royal family, martyred under the communist regime, had prepared the project of a Catholic cathedral dedicated to Saint George and obtained the necessary permits. With the rise of communism, construction was abandoned.
The works of the present cathedral were entrusted to Italian architect Giancarlo Rigamonti under the supervision of Archbishop Rrok Mirdita. Many contributions came also from abroad. The Sovereign Order of Malta participated, as evidenced by the Maltese cross visible in the stained glass depicting the martyrdom of Saint Peter. On January 26, 2002, the Cathedral was dedicated to Saint Paul, Apostle of the Nations, one of the first evangelizers of Albania. The consecration was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Secretary of State of the Holy See, sent by Pope John Paul II as papal legate.
